These are the biggest Anisoptera in Europe. Wingspan can reach 110 mm, as in Anax imperator, a widespread species. The body usually features a pattern useful to species identification and color is variable. Good fliers, these species usually fly persistently and rarely can be observed at rest. Ecological needs are variable and so they colonize differentiated habitats. In the region subject of this site very common species have been observed (even if localized in special habitats, as Aeshna juncea) but also rarer species. Male behavior is typical, with prolonged patrol flights and pursuits with other males (territorial flight). Females are more difficult to see. Best chances are when they are in oviposition (usually endophytic).
