Blue-eye

Erythromma lindenii (Selys, 1840)

DESCRIPTION

Males (wingspan: 35-40 mm) are pale blue colored with a black pattern and feature on the 2nd abdominal segment a typical black goblet-shaped mark. Female typically feature three colorations: head, thorax and abdomen base are pale yellowish or greenish-brown, the abdomen middle portion is blue and the tip is pale brown. Dorsally, female’s abdomen has a black pattern. Both sexes have lenghtened post-ocular spots, sometimes linked by a line. At the abdomen tip there is a blue segment. The pterostigma is pale. 

PHENOLOGY

In flight from May to October with a peak in July and August. 

HABITAT

This species prefers well oxygenated waters with wide surfaces, as well as lakes, gravel pits, rivers with slow stream and large canals, with abundant water vegetation. Rarely it can be observed on the banks. 

DISTRIBUTION

Typically a western Mediterranean species, it is slowly expanding its range eastwards and northwards because of global climate change. In the Cuneo region it is rare and rather localized.
