Dainty Bluet

Coenagrion scitulum (Rambur, 1842)

DESCRIPTION

Wingspan 30-40 mm, with lenghtened and pale pterostigma. Males are relatively small if compared to other Coenagrionidae. Their 3rd, 4th and 5th abdominal segments are half black, whereas the 6th and 7th are black. Typical is the black mark on the 2nd segment, its shape being referred by some authors as “a cat head”. Females feature more variability, with coloration ranging from brown-greenish to blue, with black torpedo-shaped markings on the abdomen back. 

PHENOLOGY

It flies from May to August with a peak in June and July. 

HABITAT

This species lives in still or slowly flowing water habitats, rich in vegetation. 

DISTRIBUTION

It can be found mainly in the countries on the northern Mediterranean coast, from Portugal to Asia Minor. It has been recorded also in northern Africa. Its range is in gradual expansion northwards. In the Cuneo region it is a species rare and localized in some areas near Fossano and in the Roeri (hills).
