Sombre Goldenring
Cordulegaster bidentata Selys, 1843
DESCRIPTION
If compared to C. boltonii this species shows smaller yellow bands, a difference that can be noticed particularly on the first abdominal segment and along the thorax sides. It has also a black occipital triangle and the anal triangle with 3 cells instead of 4/5. Male appendages are almost parallel and clearly separated at the base.
PHENOLOGY
Flight period ranges from mid-May to the end of August.
HABITAT
The larvae grow embedded in sediment, in the same habitats of C. boltonii, with whom it can co-habit. It prefers smaller water bodies, small springs included. Data range from the plain, where it is rare, to beyond 2000 meters above sea level.
DISTRIBUTION
Its distribution is very localized, with observations mainly on the european mountains. It is absent in all the northern Europe. It is a localized species, with recent studies found widespread in the Cuneo region, more than expected. Breeding sites finding is hard because of the species ecological needs.
