Gomphus vulgatissimus (Linnaeus, 1758)
DESCRIPTION
Medium-sized (45-50 mm). Males have an abdomen clearly broadened from 7th to 9th segment. They can be separated from other species of the same genus by greenish eyes, completely black legs and yellow antehumeral stripes, more thin than the black lines nearby.
PHENOLOGY
It flies from mid-May to the end of July.
HABITAT
It can be found only at lowest altitude, attending slowly streaming waters and collections of still water with sandy bottom where the larvae can dig in.
DISTRIBUTION
Its range spreads from France to the Urals. Northern limit spreads from Great Britain to southern Scandinavia, the southern one spreads from central Italy to northern Greece. In the Cuneo region this is a species highly localized in the plain along the watercourses with suitable conditions for breeding.
