Sympetrum meridionale (Selys, 1841)

This species features very thin black lines on the thorax. Legs are pale brown with yellow streaks; wing venation is brownish and the pterostigma is brown-reddish.

Adults can be seen from the end of May until November.

The larvae grow in still, shallow, sunny and rich in vegetation waters as ponds, muddy oxbow lakes and temporary water bodies.

In Europe it can be found in the central and southern portion, but it is spreading northwards (e.g. in Germany). Eastwards the range reaches Mongolia and Siberia. In the Cuneo region this species is rare and localized in the Roeri (hills). Some individuals in migration can be observed far away from the known breeding sites, in September and October.
